Manny was born to humble beginnings in Moriones, Tondo, Manila on December 13, 1949. His mother Curita Bambaa came from Pampanga and Bataan.
 
His father, Manuel Montalban Villar, Sr. hailed from Iloilo. The second of nine children, Manny started selling sea food at the Divisoria Market at an early age.
